What We're Reading

Euan is reading:

Jellaby by Kean Soo (again!)

Liam is reading:

Stoneheart by Charlie Fletcher and says "You should read this when I'm done."

I'm reading:
Houdini the Handcuff King by Jason Lutes and Nick Bertozzi

A graphic novel about one incident from Houdini's life - the Harvard Bridge jump of 1908.

I particularly liked what are called "Panel Discussions," an appendix which gives pertinent information on subjects such as anti-Semitism and hat-wearing in the period.

Eudora Welty book for children

How did I not know about this?

Thanks to Maud for the intelligence - she's posted about the death of Beth H. Krush, the book's illustrator. Link here. Krush and her husband Joseph also worked on the illustrations of the American edition of Mary Norton's The Borrowers.

Jellaby in the City

Oh, we need this one!

Thanks, as ever, to Betsy for the heads-up.

We were huge fans of the first Jellaby and have been waiting for this one to hit stands.

Rainbow List

Pleased to see that Susan Juby's Another Kind of Cowboy has made the 2009 Rainbow List .

What's that? You don't know what the Rainbow List is?

The Rainbow Project is a joint undertaking of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Round Table and the Social Responsibilities Round Table of the American Library Association. The annual Rainbow List presents current well-written and/or well-illustrated books, with significant and authentic GLBTQ content, which are recommended for people from birth through eighteen years of age.

Juby's book also made the American Library Association's 2009 list of Best Books for Young Adults.

Well-deserved honours, and a much nicer reception than the book had closer to home last year when it was pulled from a middle school library in Stettler, Alberta. (Freedom to Read, anyone?)

Hey, Susan, I'm thinking somebody should be making this book into a movie ... what do you say?

Button

Lots of fun to be had over at the Coraline.com site.

Mr. E. and I have had a lovely morning hanging around the Pink Palace Apartments, watching videos and buttoning our eyes.
